What can Data Visualization bring to us?

In today’s society, people not only appreciate the role that the media plays in educating, informing and entertaining the public but also understand the power that it holds. As a result, people have become keener on what the media reports to the extent that they question every broadcast and evaluate its authenticity. Today’s society is made up of an audience that questions almost every bit of information. As a result, the media has had to adopt and come up with ways of validating sensitive information and this has resulted in the introduction of data visualizations.1

Data visualization mainly incorporates figures such as graphs, charts, maps and cartoons as a means of conveying added information relating to a broadcast. Through it, broadcasts are able to inform the audience more about complex stories and provide additional information that helps them to create a better understanding and ensure that they receive the intended message from the communication. Data visualization also helps in creating a visual demonstration of what a broadcast is all about without having to go into great detail as would be the case when using words or audio.  The visualizations create a vivid image that helps the audience to better understand what the broadcast is trying to communicate.

What is Data Journalism?

The media has undergone various developments throughout history as a way of ensuring that its broadcasts are well received and understood by the target audience. These advancements have created a culture where the audience is no longer passive but actively involved in the broadcasts through their input and suggestions of how best to meet their needs. In order to incorporate the evolution of media broadcasts, data journalism has created an ideal platform where broadcasts are more interesting and more engaging with the audience.

1 Rather than just presenting a broadcast, the media has gone a step further to ensure that complex messages that are being broadcasted are broken down and disseminated in ways that are easier for the audience to understand. Data journalism also incorporates various features such as political cartoons, info graphics and news games as a way of making broadcast more interesting and more engaging to the audience. In doing so, the media is able to discuss issues such as politics, world events and other emerging issues within society in a way that is well received and thus encouraging the audience to debate on them. Through data journalism, the audiences are not just receptors but also play a part in ensuring the message broadcasted has an impact on society.

Innovation Brings the Network Effective

In its simplest form, a network is a group of two or more systems linked together. There are different types of computer networks such as local area networks. Network effects are a phenomenon which refers to the benefits of more people using a valuable service or network. The value of the service may not be realized if only a few individuals are using it. For example, the internet at its introduction was not as valuable as it is now. As users of the internet increased and more websites developed, the value of the same increased.2.jpg

Innovation has accelerated the way of doing both business and running the day to day life. This innovation depending on the field of concern is not an overnight occurrence to be undertaken; it evolves through various steps and stages. Innovation in the digital world may start from the point of an organization awareness of certain innovative way of performing certain tasks. This awareness is not associated with much information of the innovation. It, however, acts as a propellant to the organization to adopt the innovation.

Others are driven to adopt a certain innovation by interest. Due to the envisioned benefits of a certain innovative way of doing things, people begin to think and show interest in wanting to use the technology. This could lead to its adoption in the long run.1

Regardless of the motivation to adopt a given innovation, evaluation of the details of the technology is important for in-depth knowledge in order to be fully informed before committing. This will lead to the people involved trying to determine whether they will actually benefit from the innovation.

The two final steps entail trial and actual adoption of the innovation. In the trial stage, people test the usefulness of the innovation before finally adopting it. This involves looking at the workability and relevance of the innovation. It is then finally adopted when people are pleased and wholly like the innovation. When numerous people approve of it, then its value rises very fast in the society.

Why Digital audiences effect media?

2Over the years, people have relied on the media for various purposes among which are information, education and entertainment. While the media has served its purpose well, there was a hindrance in the form of communication that existed between the media and its audience. This was especially due to the fact that communication was one way. While the media could reach the audience through various channels such as radio, television and newspapers, to mention a few, there were very few avenues that the audience could use to communicate with the media. However, this challenge has been resolved by the advancement of technology that has paved the way for digital audiences.1

Technology has allowed a system where the audience can interact directly with the media even during live broadcasts. With the use of social media, for example, the audience can weigh in on issues being discussed, give suggestions, issue complaints and engage the media on other reasons whenever necessary. As a result, the audiences are no longer passive but are now considered to be part of the broadcasting experience and are often considered and their interests factored into every broadcast. Through digital audiences, the media is able to identify what the audience want and incorporate this into their broadcasts to make them more appealing.

What Is The Best Media Platform?

The news industry is one of the most trusted sources of information on current events. Furthermore, television and newspapers are still reliable media platforms. For instance, in a recent Pew research, the studies indicate that there has been a significant decline in newspaper circulation by 7% since 2010 (Mitchell & Holcomb, 2016).1.jpg

Moreover, platforms such as the television, have recorded a decrease in viewership due to the development of digital media platforms. Although cable and network TV have experienced increased revenue, their broad public exposed to digital platforms have resulted in the development of online newspapers, blogs, and websites. In the U.S, the presidential primary led to an 8% increase in television viewership.

However, after the primaries, most Americans turned away from cable or satellite TV subscriptions. Currently, the digital audience is expanding to include podcasts, social media, mobile apps and email newsletters.

The Growth of Internet

The internet has developed into a vast, amorphous system beyond simple definition. Those with a technical approach view the internet as a set of locally interconnected networks (Haigh et al., 2015).

1However, changes over time have transformed the internet from a technical tool to a communication tool. The history of the global internet dates back to the development of computers. Unlike most technologies, the genesis of the web is not linked to a single inventor. Rather, the internet is a tool that took years to develop and evolve. Its genesis begins with the genesis of electronic computers in the 1950s.

Initially, it was used during the Cold War by scientists as a government weapon. However, over time, it became a communication tool, as there was the development of instruments such as ARPANET (Internet Society, 2017). The first social interaction through the internet was facilitated through the networking of several memos written by J.C.R. Licklider in 1962. The MIT expert envisioned the world where people were interconnected through a network of computers.

Currently, the extensive research over the decades has resulted in the development of the Internet as a media platform and a medium for collaboration and interaction (Internet Society, 2017).

Web Newspaper VS Physical Newspaper

In the past age of journalism, people will buy the newspaper to get information. With the growing up of Internet, more and more people prefer to read news online. On web, people can get more new experience than the physical newspaper, for example, people can see the video news on the Internet and that is newspaper cannot make. “For newspapers, 2015 might as well have been a recession year. Weekday circulation fell 7% and Sunday circulation fell 4%, both showing their greatest declines since 2010. ” (Barthel, 2016)2

In fact, the sponsorship is really an important part of journalism. In the traditional journalism, they print the news and advertisement. But now, with developed technology, more and more people choose to read news on the website, that becomes a mainstream of getting information. Most of the journalism on the web is for free, such as BBC, New York Time and ABC. So how can this website gain revenue?

For the company that publishes news on1 the web, the major source of income is advertising. On the internet, a company can get big data like at what time people read the news a lot or how many people read this article. So the advertisement can be delivered to target audience. For example, if the news is about kids, the target audience will be the parents, so the page can show the children related advertising. It means different news will have the different target audience, the company can aim at different target audience to post different advertising. Online journalism will be easier to get the advertising sponsorship
